Who did Bigfoot’s Makeup?

This past weekend I binged on some classic movies like Planet of the Apes and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Which sent me off on a rabbit hole of research on the ape makeup effects done in both movies. I learned some interesting things by reading this book:

Space Odyssey: Stanley Kubrick, Arthur C. Clarke, and the Making of a Masterpiece

And then I watched this documentary:

Making Apes: The Artists Who Changed Film [Blu-ray]

And what I learned was very interesting. The biggest laugh is that Kubrick is accused of not only faking the moon landing but also doing the effects for the Patterson-Gimlin film. But wait there’s more: The Kubrick effects team accuses the Planet of the Apes team of stealing their special effects techniques. The Planet guys seems to think they invented everything and Rick Baker is standing at the sidelines not saying anything.

And don’t forget that Disney was accused of doing Bigfoot special effects as well.

My vote is for the Kubrick team as their work looks the best by far.

But Rick Baker is still the King.

Bigfoot Alerts

I saw this Sasquatch Alert from the Ministry of Forests, Lands & Natural Resource Operations of British Columbia posted to local area Facebook groups recently. I can’t confirm nor deny it’s legitimacy but it made me think to go googling for other Bigfoot alerts to see how many are out there.

I made sure to not include any obvious joke ones but can’t confirm these that I did include. News reports are plenty but actual alerts from government or municipal authorities seems to be few and far between.

The PG Film stance that Bigfoot is portrayed as is all the rage though isn’t it?

And I don’t know what the hell the barcode one is all about.

I think Bigfoot needs a new Public Relations person.

Partial Print from Sasquatch Park

Well my hard work is starting to pay off. To be honest it’s the work of other’s that I am benefiting from. As I’ve mentioned on here before, I have a deal with local nature photographers who are out and about in the wild every single day around here. The deal is that they give me a heads up on any possible prints they find and I give them free tech support and websites. They send me their photo with GPS location and I hit the road right away. If I can I’ll meet them at the site. Yesterday I got there after she left and found a suspected print and a partial print. This was in Sasquatch Park (yes, it’s really called that). These are the best signs of Bigfoot I’ve found so far. I was able to take a plaster casting of the partial print and it turned out pretty nice if I say so myself. I’m thinking I might submit these to Jeff Meldrum for review.

PS – Ya, I think that’s dog hair too but it looked interesting. Not sure.

Casting Bigfoot prints in Plaster

I’ve been trying to do some of my first plaster casting of possible Bigfoot prints that I’ve found. This video was a good start for me. Some things I’ve learned and some things I still question:

  • Use bamboo skewers set into the back of the wet plaster to give more strength
  • Don’t fill very far past the edge of the print and don’t use that barrier he does. Seems to me to be a waste of plaster and makes it too heavy.
  • Mix in a ziplock bag for easy transportation of the mix to the site and easy cleanup.
  • Add a hanger wire into the wet plaster for easy wall mounting later.
  • Write your initials and date into the wet plaster. Using sharpee later is easy to read but can be sanded off or fade.
  • Does the hairspray trick work?
  • Does the talc powder trick work?
  • What about wet prints? What to do?
  • Do people actually wash the print after with water? Why? I just use a stiff brush to clean.

So what if they DO catch him?

So I watched this documentary the other day called Shooting Bigfoot and it brought up a lot of questions for me. Mainly because in this “film” some people had claimed to have caught Bigfoot. They said they had a body in the freezer and were touring it around the countryside and charging admission. Of course, this was all bogus.

But…consider what could happen when they DO catch him. What will happen and how will everyone react when one is caught dead or alive? Now is the Bigfoot forest a protected area? No more logging? Do people start Bigfoot cults and worship him as the next savior? Is it on the TV all the time for a few years with debates of “It’s still fake” versus “No really, it’s true this time”. What if Bigfoot is caught alive? Does the United Nations or Amnesty International step in to give him protected status? Who owns him? The person who found him or does the government just snatch him up? I’m betting the latter on this one.

Other than the news media going apeshit (pun intended) and every “expert” on the planet suddenly being on television, what would happen?

But the thing that really gets my goat is considering the possibility that if Bigfoot is capture alive, what if he can communicate? What if he can talk?

Whoa. Happy 420 everyone.

Bigfoot Merch and Cafepress Sucks!

Here’s our new BigfootFinder.ca website logo. I like the balance it represents with the ying yang and the human hand and sasquatch foot. Working hand and foot together I guess.

So I was going to announce our site’s new logo today and offer t-shirts, hats, stickers and patches. Not because I wanted to be like every other website, blogger and youtuber who just spams the hell out of the interverse with their t-shirts. But because I wanted to buy some for myself and friends and family. And as bribes for people who help with the site and my research.

So I went back to CafePress that I had success years ago with. And that was a complete waste of two hours of my time. It was a clusterfuck of 404 page not found errors, redirecting to cafepress sites in other countries, crashing, error after error and a vicious cycle of adding images and products that just wouldn’t show up. It was the single worst website experience I have had in over 15 years. It was absolute crap. I am amazed they are still in business at all.

But hey, how about the new logo? Nice huh? I think I’ll get some stickers made at a local print shop and mail them to friends.

Harrison Hot Springs – The Home to Sasquatch

Moving out here to Harrison Hot Springs British Columbia many years ago I didn’t fully comprehend just how much Sasquatch has permeated the community.

Bigfoot is a BIG part of the tourism and the community. Yes, we had John Green who really did help put it on the map. And yes, a few historical sightings. But nothing like the Patterson–Gimlin film. Is seems there is something more driving this besides tourism dollars. As they say “Where there’s smoke there’s fire” and I think I smell Bigfoot smoke.

Here’s a collection of photos from the Internet of Bigfoot signs and statues in and around this community. This guy is everywhere!

Bigfoot Brains

The always amazing Don Jeffrey Meldrum posted a link to a interesting brains article on his Facebook page.

“Scientists discover why the human brain is so big” from Theguardian.com

What interests me, and others I presume, in this article is the statement that “Molecular switch makes human organ three times larger than great apes’, study finds”.

So what if a very large great ape like the Gigantopithecus had this molecular switch turned on? What if by chance this large ape was lucky enough, just like us, to have this switch?

Well, you’d have a Bigfoot I think. And why isn’t this possible? It’s a perfect explanation of Bigfoot.

Another interesting statement: “Tinker with the switch and the human brain loses its growth advantage, while the great ape brain can be made to grow more like a human’s.”

So is it reasonable to think that someone, somewhere hasn’t already tinkered? Or maybe it was just Mother Nature who flipped his switch? I mean, some how the human’s switch was flipped.

OK, maybe I’m flipped. But it’s something worth thinking about.
